Build it
Seven steps. The 3D view follows along as you scroll. The parts you're working on are yellow, and the pocket holes or screws for that step are red.
- 01
Cut the pieces
Cut every piece on the cut list:
- A Seat boards, two at 47″
- B Stiffeners, two at 35″
Pick the better face of each seat board for the top.
- 02
Drill the pocket holes
With the jig set for 1½″, drill:
- Seat (A): three pocket holes along one edge of one board, on the underside: one in the middle and one 6″ from each end.
- Stiffeners (B): four pocket holes along one face of each, close to one long edge: 3″ and 12″ from each end.
- 03
Join the seat boards
Lay the two seat boards (A) face down, pocket holes along the joint. Clamp them flat, glue the edges and drive 2½″ pocket screws.
- 04
Add the stiffeners
Stand a stiffener (B) on edge down the middle of each seat board (A), 6″ from each end, pocket holes against the seat and facing each other. Glue and drive 2½″ pocket screws up into the seat.
TipThe stiffeners are what make this a bench and not a coffee table. With two adults on it, a 2x8 seat alone would sag between the legs. - 05
Sand the seat
Sand the seat (A) with 80, 120 and 180 grit and round the front and back edges well: the backs of knees rest on them. Finish it now, before the legs go on.
- 06
Screw on the hairpin legs
Lay the seat (A) face down on a blanket. Set a leg in each corner with its plate ½″ in from both edges, the rods leaning out toward the corner. Mark the holes, drill ⅛″ pilot holes no deeper than ¾″, and drive a #10 × 1″ pan-head screw in every hole.
Check your legs' own instructions and rating first. Use heavy-duty three-rod legs made for benches, rated for at least 200 lb each. Two-rod coffee table legs are not strong enough to sit on.

Test it
Stand the bench up and press on the foot caps. Before anyone uses it, sit on each end and in the middle and rock side to side. It must not rack, creak or sag. Check the leg screws again after a week of use.
Watch outIt's a bench for sitting, not a step stool. Don't stand on it.
